Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I have our piano tuned?
We recommend a minimum of 4 tunings per year. We also strongly recommend a tuning prior to any event involving the use of piano, regardless of when it was last tuned.

Do you rent pianos?
Yes. We have a Steinway Model B grand piano available to rent for events. The piano was fully rebuilt in 2014 with a newly refinished ebony satin case, new pin block, complete action rebuild, and original ivory key tops. This piano is 6’ 10.5” in length and is suitable for performances. Please contact Mariana Quinn for more information and pricing.

Can I purchase piano accoutrements through PTS?
Yes. You can purchase such accoutrements as covers, locks, benches, dollies, casters, etc., directly from PTS.

Do you move pianos?
No. All piano moving is performed by outside professional piano movers. Contact PTS for piano moving referrals.

Do you sell pianos?
No. PTS does not sell pianos but can advise in the purchase of an instrument.

Do you accept piano donations?
Yes. However we require that the piano be inspected prior to acceptance. We will be happy to evaluate any instrument in Massachusetts.

Do you permit extended techniques on pianos?
Extended techniques are considered on a case by case basis. Please read our Services page for our policies and instructions. Room G16 in the basement of the Music Building is the dedicated ‘experimental piano practice room’. This is the only room where students are allowed to experiment with extended techniques on a piano without obtaining prior permission.

Do PTS personnel do piano work outside of Harvard?
Yes. Most of our staff do private work outside of Harvard. Meet our staff.

Do you tune or repair organs?
No. We work exclusively on acoustic stringed keyboard instruments.
